The new festival celebrating both female and gender minority artists.
From the 19th to the 24th of september 2022 in Brussels. Supported by Delphine Houba, the Alderwoman of Culture, Tourism, Big Events of the city of Brussels and the Riches-Claires theatre.
FAME is an annual, multidisciplinary performing arts festival designed for the general public. This festive cultural event seeks to create dialogue between art and the different types of feminism through various performances which have been produced by predominantly female and gender minority artists.
The schedule features performances created both in French and Dutch-speaking Belgium as well as abroad. These performances combine the work of established, emergent, and young, new artists. The artistic programme is comprised of various activities and performances that offer a glimpse of fairer and more inclusive, social, societal, and political imaginaries. Although most of the shows have been created by women and gender minority artists, this festival has not been designed with gender, women or feminisms as a theme, but on the contrary, it is about giving space and freedom of choice and expression to these artists.
Every year, the schedule will have a specific theme. will be Ouverture(s) or “Opening(s)”. In French, ouverture(s), also translates as openness. In the plural form, it references the opening of our programme in space and time, but also the notion of opening up the mind to the plurality of bodies, ages, subjectivities, narratives and to imaginations. The concept of openness also represents the desire not to have distil the different perspectives on what is “real” to one single worldview, but to accept the multitudes of viewpoints that exist. This is why FAME has created 5 different pathways, each with their own schedule. These pathways are as follows:
Bodies · Non-human beings · Queerness · Systems of exploitation · Women’s heritage
Running alongside the live performances and showcases are workshops, meetings, exhibitions, parties, free events and more in order to assist in the creation of dialogue between the arts, the audience and the associated networks. You will find an overview of all the activities attached.
This kind of a festival is more than necessary, especially since many studies have recently shed some light on inequalities, violence and harassment experienced by those in the field of performing arts. In summary, women, gender minorities and particularly people of colour are very much present, yet symbolically and economically underrepresented in the cultural sector.
The creation of the FAME festival is an initiative of the Councillor of culture of the City of Brussels, Delphine Houba, who intends to contribute to the strengthening of equality in the cultural field. Since no large-scale, multidisciplinary festival such as FAME exists in the City of Brussels that puts women and gender minorities at the heart of the cultural agenda. Considering Brussels is considered the heart of Europe by many, it is also the perfect place for a festival like this.
