Neways
“I see Neways as a blob for acceleration, incubation and collaboration. Because of my very different interests, I am able to meet people where they are at in their own ideas and initiatives. The ultimate goal is to have a "success" in any metrics defined by the collaborators.”
Guillermo Garcia, founder of Neways
What inspired the creation of Neways and how did it develop into what it is today with a wide array of services?
“It is a way to explore different sectors and industries, as well as the ability to collaborate with people with different skill sets.”
You offer an educational platform, instructional design, psychotherapy, and video capture (to name a few). Do you find that these services, although different, feed off of each other to provide an even more unique experience to your clients?
“Yes, I actually think you can never be hyperspecialized in one thing, because the more you learn, the more malleable the constructs become. The more you play with, the more ideas will naturally come to you. I honestly wish I could try every job, I love to see it as a challenge and try to understand what my own personal take would look like in every sector.”
Neways offers psychotherapy with a focus on queer mental health. What advice would you give to a queer individual who may want to seek out help or services?
“Yes we do indeed. As a clinical psychotherapist, I focus on specific conditions and dynamics that present themselves in a very specific way for queer people. a) Self-esteem & self-image, b) Addictive behavior (substances & relational), c) Healthy relationships (ethical monogamy & non-monogamy), d) Muscle & body dysmorphia.”
“To not be shy. We offer a free 30 minute session to see if there if there is interest. We also offer scalable rates based on a % of the person's income, instead of having a flat rate. This way we can help people from different backgrounds and not contribute to therapy being inaccessible to most.”
What is your [creative] process when starting a new project, collaborating with others, and providing services for someone? Is there a project you feel most proud of?
“I like to use a multiple list randomizer. It gives me a cognitive high to think of different scenarios and work with what you've got. For example:
1. Partner list: (a) dancer, (b) photographer, (c) actor
2. Emotion: (a) anger, (b) fear, (c) happiness
3. Medium: (a) visual, (b) audio, (c) digital, (d) paper
4. Audience: (a) children, (b) teenagers, (c) adults
…and so forth. After you have all lists, you can shuffle and try to come up with an idea that matches all the conditions of the randomizer. A lot of the time you have to run it again, but sometimes you get to think of new ways to do things, hence the name.”
What advice would you give to someone who may want to start offering their own unique services or talents and bring their ideas to life?
“It sounds weird to say it again but to reach out. If they ever need to run their ideas by someone or are looking for collaborators to help them come to life. The intention of this is to serve as an exchange with people who have their own passion projects. If there is an overlap, it could turn into a nice collaboration.”
Are there upcoming projects that you would like to bring attention to? Any specific services you would like to highlight?
“Very much so! The psychotherapy services for sure, since they are aimed at the queer community. There are ongoing projects about diversity in children's stories, so hopefully by the time this comes out we can share a bit more about the book we are working on. I also have the project to start having group discussions and workshops about specific emotional processes such as trauma, shame, procrastination, self-destructive behavior, anxiety, etc.”
